大部分考生都有这样的一种感觉，越是熟悉的内容听起来越不费力，即使语速再快也不用担心跟不上;而越是陌生的内容听起来越费力，即使语速不快也觉得每分钟超过了200wpm并且无时无刻不在担心听不懂或者信息遗漏的现象发生 。这种感觉其实很大程度上和我们对于单词的记忆质量及反应状态息息相关，雅思听力是对单词的质量要求最高的一个版块，包括单词的准确发音、正确拼写、词性把握和用法搭配 。例如approach这个单词，部分考生容易将其误拼为“aproach”并且重读发生错误，此外该词在雅思听力当中既会考查其动词形式又会考查其名词形式 。2013年面市的Cambridge IELTS 9当中TEST 1里面Section 3当中有一句话“So, how did you approach your presentation, Hiroko?” “Well, to speak frankly, I read my notes too!”其中approach作为动词，此处的释义为deal with即“处理“的意思;而当该词出现在下句“However, it really is the best approach you can try to get people’s response though it is somewhat time-consuming. If you think you can spare your study time, just go for it.”此时approach作为名词，释义为a manner in which a problem is solved即”方法“的意思;此外该词在”A storm is approaching”的句子当中就必须被理解为to come near即“到来”的意思 。
