澳大利亚PC World发布了据说是来自微软代表分发给Vista OEM的邮件，邮件中称运行盗版Vista会出现屏幕全黑而不可用的状况 。从而，让人们联想到微软对盗版用户下了"黑"手 。但是，很快微软澄清说这种说法并不准确，微软并未增强盗版打击力度 。
这封邮件的标题很夸张： "Pirated Vista - A darkness descends"，原文如下：
Good Afternoon, As of this week, Microsoft have activated a function in Vista called "Reduced Functionality". This is a specific function in Vista which effectively disables non genuine copIEs of Windows. Therefore, anyone who has a pirated copy of Vista will experience:
【微软澄清Vista不存在死亡黑屏】A black screen after 1 hour of browsing
No start menu or task bar
No desktop
Please communicate this anti-piracy initiative from Microsoft to your resellers - note this function has only just been activated in Vista worldwide and therefore any issues with non genuine versions will start to arise from now onwards. (wired.com)
微软早在今年3月就发布了有关Vista缩减模式的说明：Windows Vista 中的缩减功能模式的行为，详细描述了正版及盗版Vista进入缩减模式后的不同表现 。其中的确提到了用户可以运行Vista一个小时的说法，但并未提及黑屏一事 。有意思的是，有人将黑屏一事做成了Flash演示，有兴趣的可以自己试试看 。
