活动铰链／活动折叶，英文中是living hinge，维基百科的定义为：

A living hinge is a hinge (flexure bearing) made from the same material as the two rigid pieces it connects, rather than cloth, leather, or some other flexible substance. It is typically thinned or cut to allow the rigid pieces to bend along the line of the hinge. The minimal friction and very little wear in such a hinge makes it useful in the design of microelectromechanical systems, and the low cost and ease of manufacturing makes them quite common in disposable packaging1]

维基百科定义中，强调了活动铰链的材质和其相连的两个材质是相同的，而不是使用布质、皮革活着其它柔性材质。日常生活中最常见于一次性物品和其它低成本的注塑成型的塑料产品，比如下面的保鲜盒中边扣就是典型的活动铰链：
活动铰链在中密度纤维板（MDF）切割中的应用，很显然通过加入铰链，可以增强模型的灵活性。虽然MDF材质更厚更脆，但是使用该材质制作活动铰链也是可能的，比如下面的一个笔记本封面的设计：
