尽管移动互联网已经极大地改变了人们的阅读习惯，但新技术也只是部分替代了传统的书籍媒介。即便如此，谷歌旗下的 Play 图书服务还是在 2010 年 12 月迎来了十周岁生日，而没有像其它某些服务一样被一关了之。高级产品经理 Judy Chang 表示：“本周，我们迎来了谷歌数字书店的 10 周年纪念日” 。
据悉，2010 年 12 月 6 日，谷歌在美国地区正式推出了 Google Play Books电子书服务。人们可以在任何兼容设备上阅读图书，并获得基于其喜好的相关建议。
自那时起，Google Play Books 已经拓展到 75 个市场区域，图书目录也发展到了将近 700 万本。
此外多年来，谷歌一直在使用相关技术来拓展产品范围，以满足读者和出版商的更多需求。
比如对于漫画读者，BubbleZoom 功能可借助机器学习来识别和拓展会话气泡，已改善用户在手机上的漫画阅读体验。
现在，Google Play Books 商店中已经提供了成千上万的有声读物，包括基于谷歌自动叙事技术而创建的一系列免费公共有声读物。
