1. 表示“解释” ， 通常不接双宾语；若语义上需要这类结构，可以改用 explain sth to sb结构 。如：
请把这条规则给我们解释一下 。
误：Please explain us this rule.
正：Please explain this rule to us.
若其中的 sth 较长或较复杂（比如是不定式或从句） ， 也可以用explain to sb sth 。如：
He explained to us why he was late. 他给我们解释了他迟到的原因 。
I’ll explain to you why I like it.
Don’t sign anything until your solicitor has explained the contract to you
在律师向你解释清楚合同之前，不要签署任何东西 。
The teacher explained the rules to the children.
老师向孩子们说明规则 。
It was difficult to explain the problem to beginners.
对初学者解释这个问题很难 。
2. explain to sb that/ explain that
I’m going to have to explain to them that I can’t pay them.
我将不得不向他们解释我不能付钱给他们 。
I explained that an ambulance would be coming soon.
我解释说救护车很快就到 。
Alex explained that his car had broken down.
亚历克斯解释说他的汽车出了毛病 。
3. explain how 从句
Can you explain how the machine is operated?
请说明如何使用这台机器好吗？
Can you explain how the email system works?
你能说明一下电子邮件系统的工作原理吗？
4. explain wh-从句/ explained to Sb wh-
He explained who each person in the photo was.
他对照片里的人一一作了介绍 。
She explained to them what to do in an emergency.
她向他们说明了紧急情况下应采取的行动 。
Well, that doesn’t explain why you didn’t phone.
嗳，那不是你不打电话的理由 。
Different hypotheses have been put forward to explain why these foods are more likely to cause problems.
人们已经提出不同的假说来解释为什么这些食物更有可能带来问题 。
They shouted him down when he tried to explain why Zaire needed an interimgovernment .

5. explain+名词或代词

6. explain后接反身代词作宾语，有两个意思 。如：
(1) 表示把自己的意思表达清楚 。如：
Could you explain yourself a bit more? 你能把意思说得更清楚点吗?
Could you explain yourself a little more─I didn’t understand.
请把你的意思说得更清楚一点——我还不明白 。
(2) 表示对自己的行为进行解释 。如；
I really don’t see why I should have to explain myself to you.
